Detail Description:

Our recently discovered St. George has to be considered one of König’s triumphs. The monumental composition and the overall finesse of the copper plate create a striking image and a retelling of an ancient myth that would have flattered and enthralled the most sophisticated patron. In acknowledging the Counter-Reformation’s cult for powerful imagery of the lives of the Saints and the Virgin Mary, König’s St. George must have rivalled any other copper painting at the time. A film of paint has isolated the copper surface from the air and so, miraculously, nothing has altered the brilliance of colour in four hundred years.
