A Still Life of Porcelain and Fruit on a Marble-Top Table

A Still Life of Porcelain and Fruit on a Marble-Top Table

pastel on vellum, 14 ½ x 19 in. (36.9 x 48 cm)

The creator (as yet unidentified) of this uncommonly well-preserved pastel had clearly studied the still lifes of the great Swiss pastellist and the work of Henri-Horace Roland de la Porte. The detail lavished on each object attests to a full understanding of the idea of ‘le temps suspendu’, the French idiom in still life painting. We are grateful to Mr. John Whitehead for pointing out that the turquoise jug is Vincennes or early Sèvres porcelain, about 1754-58.
